The Greatest Horses That Have Competed at the Cheltenham Festival

The United Kingdom hosts a horse racing event annually at the Cheltenham racecourse called the Cheltenham Festival. The ancient event has had many horses participating. Great horses around the world have been staged on this platform, making it highly competitive. The best horses ever at this festival include the following.

Captain Christy

The gelding was bred and trained in Ireland. This horse was a steeplechaser and hurdler who participated and won the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The bay coloured horse took part in several races winning the UK event in 1974.

Dawn Run

Dawn is one of the greatest horses of all time. It was a thoroughbred racehorse from Ireland and was foaled in 1978. The mare won many honours including the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1984. Charmian Hill owned Dawn Run, and during her career, Paddy Mullins served as a trainer.

Kauto Star

Clive D. Smith owned Kauto Star was bred in France and was trained to become one of the best horses to participate in the Cheltenham Festival. Paul Nicholls did all the training work, making the horse provide stiff competition in the United Kingdom event.

Desert Orchid

Popularly known as Dessie, the horse was a great horse from England. The grey coloured horse attracted many supporters due to its attacking style of racing. Desert Orchid was communally owned by James Burridge, Midge Burridge, Richard Burridge and Simon Bullimore.

Denman, a horse, commonly referred to as The Tank, was sired by Presenting, foaled in 2000 and died in 2018. The castrated horse took part and won the Cheltenham Gold Cup under the training of Paul Nicholls.
